The animals were given two bowls of liquid and permitted to drink from them for a period of five minutes while their taste preferences were evaluated. The first bowl was filled with water, while the second bowl had a solution of water mixed with one of six distinct natural sugars: fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose, or maltose.
Sucrose was not used in this experiment. A low concentration and a high concentration of each sugar was demonstrated. The pandas favored any of the sugar solutions more than they did regular water. This was notably clear with regard to fructose and sucrose, as the animals enthusiastically drank a whole liter of each of these sweet liquids during the allotted five-minute testing intervals for each.
“Pandas adore sweets,” remarked Reed. “Our findings help explain why Bao Bao, a six-month-old giant panda cub at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, seems to enjoy sweet potato as a first food when she is being weaned,” In a further round of preference tests, the giant panda was asked its opinion on five different types of artificial sweeteners.
- There was virtually no preference for any of the artificial sweetener solutions, which suggests that giant pandas either lack the ability to taste these chemicals or do not strongly perceive them as being sweet.
- Studies based on cells conducted in parallel revealed a correlation between the behavior of the pandas and the way in which panda taste receptor cells respond to sweets when tested in vitro.
After isolating the genes that code for the panda sweet taste receptor from the DNA that was obtained from giant pandas during routine health exams, these genes were then put into human host cells that were grown in culture. Sugars, on the other hand, elicited a robust response from these cells, but most artificial sweeteners did not.
- Researchers were able to prove, with the assistance of this step, that pandas had a functioning sweet taste receptor, which is the basis for their capacity to detect and react to sugars.
- This is the first study of its kind to investigate the relationship between taste perception in giant pandas and eating behavior.
We plan to continue this research in order to investigate how people experience bitter flavors “said Peihua Jiang, PhD, a molecular biologist at Monell who was the study’s primary author. In light of the fact that this critically endangered species’ natural habitats are still being destroyed, the findings may have important repercussions for efforts to preserve the species.
