This was a book that Christopher Bing, the illustrator, enjoyed reading when he was a youngster. The book has been reimagined by him, and he has included a meticulously redrawn version of Little Black Sambo with the original text.
Melissa Block, the host of the program All Things Considered on NPR, has a conversation with Bing and David Pilgrim, the director of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia in Big Rapids, Michigan, about the difficult history of the book.
Why did Sambo’s change their name?
Sambo’s, the last remaining location of a breakfast chain that began in 1957, is changing its name to something less offensive. The name, which was a derogatory racial epithet used for Black and mixed-Black indigenous people, is being changed in the midst of protests against police brutality and racism taking place all over the country, as reported by Today.
The founders of the restaurant, Sam Battistone Sr. and Newell Bohnett, originally came up with the name by combining their respective nicknames, “Sam” and “Bo.” However, for decades, as reported by SFGate, “the walls of Sambo’s restaurants nationwide were adorned with painted imagery associated with The Story of Little Black Sambo,” a children’s book written by Helen Bannerman in 1899 that became controversial for its depictions of racial stereotypes.
According to Chad Stevens, grandson of Sam Battistone Sr., who spoke with Today magazine, “These are hard times so we had to stand up to the plate.” We have been operating under this brand name for sixty-five years, but out of respect for Black Lives Matter and the struggles faced by the African American community, I have covered up as much of it as I can.

But now he was the grandest Tiger in the Jungle. Suddenly, he was confronted by a dreadful sound that could be described as a “Grrrrrrrrrrr,” and it was getting louder and louder. Little Black Sambo said, “Oh, dear! There are all the Tigers coming back to eat me up! What will I do?” So he hurried swiftly to a palm tree and peered over it to see what the problem was.
“Oh, dear!” he muttered. “There are all the Tigers coming back to eat me up!” And there he witnessed all of the Tigers engaging in combat and arguing over which one of them was the most powerful. And last, they had all worked themselves up to such a state of rage that they leapt to their feet, stripped off all of the elegant clothing, and began to rend and bite each other with their sharp claws and enormous, pearly white fangs.
They came crashing and sliding right up to the very foot of the tree where Little Black Sambo was hiding, but he ran swiftly under the cover of the umbrella before they could reach him. In the midst of their struggle and confusion, the tigers managed to grab hold of one another’s tails, and as a result, they found themselves arranged in a circle around the tree.
Then, when the Tigers were very small and very far away, Little Black Sambo jumped up and called out, “Oh! Tigers! why have you taken off all your nice clothes? Don’t you want them any more?” However, the Tigers only responded with “Gr-r-rrr!” Then, Little Black Sambo said, “If you want them, say so, or I’ll take them away.” However, the Tigers would not let go of each other’s tails, and And despite the fact that they were in a state of extreme rage, the Tigers refused to let go of one another’s tails.
They were so enraged that they began to circle the tree in an effort to devour one another, and as they did so, they picked up their pace until they were circling the tree at such a high rate that you couldn’t even make out their legs. And they continued to run faster and faster and faster until they all just vanished into thin air, and there was nothing left but a large puddle of melted butter (known as “ghi” in India) at the base of the tree.
Now, Black Jumbo was just coming home from his work with a great big brass pot in his arms, and when he saw what was left of all the Tigers, he said, “Oh! what lovely melted butter! I’ll take that home to Black Mumbo for her to cook with.” So he put it all into the great big brass pot, and then he took it home to Black Mumbo for her to use to cook with.
When Black Mumbo discovered that the butter had melted, she couldn’t contain her excitement. “Now,” she said, “we’ll all have pancakes for supper!” So she gathered flour and eggs and milk and sugar and butter, and she prepared a giant big dish of the most wonderful pancakes.
